Progress in the Square (a.k.a. traffic is about to get ugly)

The much talked about changes at Oakley Square are just around the corner. In the next few days work should begin along Madison Avenue beginning at Drake Ave and the Esplanade and continuing all the way to the pedestrian bridge down towards Ridge Rd.

The project has been in the works for years and what originally started as a $50,000 grant has turned into a nearly $7 million streetscape project. The first phase which will costs close to $3.3 million will focus on Oakley Square and will include new sidewalks and streetlights, a larger Geier Esplanade, the reconfiguring of the Isabella/Markbreit/ Allston mess and a dedicated left turn lane at King Arthur’s Court (yay!). As I mentioned before, this phase should begin in the next few days.

The second phase will begin in 2010 and includes changes on the eastern end of the business district around Boca. New sidewalks, crosswalks, and bus shelters are also in the plan.  As you can imagine traffic around the square is about to get ugly- lanes will be shifted or closed and I’m sure everything will get much worse before it gets better.  So if you live in the area I suggest trying to find some alternate routes.
